What Happens to the Body?
When someone is in a car accident, the ligaments that hold their bones and joints together become overstretched, inflammation begins to set in, and some ligaments and muscles can be torn. That usually sets up a lot of scar tissue problems down the road.

A Multipronged Approach to Care
Even if your pain isn’t severe, it’s a good idea to get a thorough chiropractic evaluation. Many musculoskeletal injuries, such as whiplash, do not cause extreme pain right away. It may be several weeks before chronic pain arises. By coming in for a chiropractic exam as soon as possible after your accident, we can ensure your injuries begin healing as quickly as possible.
People heal much faster when we clear out their nerve system after a car accident. Chiropractic care also keeps things in line structurally, while their soft tissues are healing after a car accident. Dr. Sheaffer will provide chiropractic adjustments and recommend ice, stretches and exercises to help you heal.
Dr. Sheaffer will perform a complete nerve system evaluation and chiropractic exam, including surface electromyography and thermography. If necessary, he will recommend X-rays. The next step is beginning a regimen of chiropractic care if appropriate.
We see most practice members a minimum of 3 days/week initially, typically every other day for a specified period. Care frequency will be reduced when you are ready.
How long will it take to recover from my accident?
Dr. Sheaffer can’t say as everyone is different. He will give his best educated guess based on how bad the accident was, previous injuries, and your current physical condition. After a whiplash type injury, treatment duration can be as short as four weeks, but sometimes as long as six months of care.
Whiplash is one of the most common injuries we see at our clinic. This type of injury occurs when the soft tissues surrounding the spine get damaged. The two most common symptoms of whiplash are neck pain and stiffness. These often don’t occur until a day or two after the accident.
Herniated and bulging discs also often occur due to auto accidents. With this type of injury, one or more fluid-filled discs located between the vertebrae become forced out of place due to the impact of the accident. Degeneration and arthritis will follow down the road.
Whiplash associated disorders can show up down the road if people don’t get care early enough. They should get in immediately after a car accident to prevent problems from showing up weeks, months and sometimes years later.
By all means, if you feel you need to, are bleeding, or in severe pain, please go to the emergency room. We recommend visiting us after being checked out in the ER, as it’s common to miss vertebral subluxations and nerve interference, which they likely won’t look for.
